Cavity insulation top-up across the Scottish Borders
We cover 4 towns in the Scottish Borders: Galashiels, Hawick, Peebles and Kelso.
Exposure matters for every cavity wall. The Scottish Borders has a mix of moderate and more exposed sites. Hilltop, coastal and west-facing walls take the brunt of wind-driven rain, so the survey records exposure for each elevation before a material is chosen.
For semi-detached and terraced homes in the Scottish Borders, cavity barriers are fitted where your wall meets your neighbour's so the fill stays on your side. Scottish Borders properties with rendered or painted walls get a closer look at the outer finish, because cracked render can let rain behind it.
Building standards in Scotland
In Scotland, work associated with thermal insulating material within a wall is listed in schedule 3 of the Building (Scotland) Regulations as work that does not need a building warrant. It must still meet the building standards, so the survey still checks that the wall and the chosen material are suitable, including exposure to wind-driven rain.
Funding in Scotland
- Home Energy Scotland is the starting point for the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan and for Warmer Homes Scotland, which can include cavity wall insulation.
- Many councils also run area-based schemes for insulation in particular streets or estates.
- ECO4 runs until 31 December 2026 across Great Britain, including Scotland.

How do I know if my walls need a top-up?
Cold patches on internal walls, a thermal image showing uneven heat loss, or an EPC that says 'filled cavity' when parts of the house feel colder are all signs. Extensions are a common cause: the new wall is insulated as built, but the old wall it joins may have been left partly empty.
What is included
- Borescope survey at several points
- Map of filled and empty sections
- Targeted fill with a compatible system
- Making good
- Written result with photos
