Bonded polystyrene bead insulation in Tyne and Wear

For homes, landlords and businesses in Tyne and Wear, bonded polystyrene bead insulation starts with a free survey and a plain-English result. Bonded bead insulation is expanded polystyrene beads coated with an adhesive binder as they are blown in, so they set into a free-draining, fully filled layer.

Local weather affects which walls can be filled. Tyne and Wear has a mix of moderate and more exposed sites. Hilltop, coastal and west-facing walls take the brunt of wind-driven rain, so the survey records exposure for each elevation before a material is chosen.

Tyne and Wear properties with rendered or painted walls get a closer look at the outer finish, because cracked render can let rain behind it. Most Tyne and Wear houses built from the 1920s onwards have cavity walls, but the survey still checks each one: cavity width, debris, the condition of the brickwork and how exposed each wall is.

Building Regulations in England

Filling an existing cavity wall is notifiable building work in England. Either a building notice goes to building control before the work, or the installer self-certifies it through a government-approved competent person scheme such as CIGA's CWISC scheme. The insulation used must also be suitable for the wall it goes into, which is why the survey checks construction, condition and exposure first.

Funding in England

  • ECO4, the energy-supplier scheme, has been extended to 31 December 2026 and government has said there will be no successor supplier obligation.
  • The Great British Insulation Scheme closed as planned on 31 March 2026.
  • Warm Homes: Local Grant supports low-income households in England through councils, and the January 2026 Warm Homes Plan sets out fully funded upgrades for low-income homes, with more detail still being published.

What to know before you choose beads

Polystyrene is combustible, so beads are not the right choice for every building; height, use and nearby openings matter, and the system certificate sets the limits. PVC-sheathed cables in the cavity should be sleeved or kept out of contact with the beads where the certificate requires it. We check both at survey.

What is included

  • Certified bonded bead system
  • Binder applied at the nozzle
  • Making good to the mortar colour
  • Cable and opening checks at survey
  • Regulations route and guarantee named on the quote
