Bonded polystyrene bead insulation across the Forth Valley
We cover 4 towns in the Forth Valley: Stirling, Falkirk, Alloa and Grangemouth.
Wind-driven rain is the first thing the surveyor weighs up. The Forth Valley has a mix of moderate and more exposed sites. Hilltop, coastal and west-facing walls take the brunt of wind-driven rain, so the survey records exposure for each elevation before a material is chosen.
Most Forth Valley houses built from the 1920s onwards have cavity walls, but the survey still checks each one: cavity width, debris, the condition of the brickwork and how exposed each wall is. A suitable wall in the Forth Valley is usually filled in a single day from outside, with drill holes made good to match the pointing.
Building standards in Scotland
In Scotland, work associated with thermal insulating material within a wall is listed in schedule 3 of the Building (Scotland) Regulations as work that does not need a building warrant. It must still meet the building standards, so the survey still checks that the wall and the chosen material are suitable, including exposure to wind-driven rain.
Funding in Scotland
- Home Energy Scotland is the starting point for the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan and for Warmer Homes Scotland, which can include cavity wall insulation.
- Many councils also run area-based schemes for insulation in particular streets or estates.
- ECO4 runs until 31 December 2026 across Great Britain, including Scotland.

What to know before you choose beads
Polystyrene is combustible, so beads are not the right choice for every building; height, use and nearby openings matter, and the system certificate sets the limits. PVC-sheathed cables in the cavity should be sleeved or kept out of contact with the beads where the certificate requires it. We check both at survey.
What is included
- Certified bonded bead system
- Binder applied at the nozzle
- Making good to the mortar colour
- Cable and opening checks at survey
- Regulations route and guarantee named on the quote
