Cavity wall insulation in Tayside

Cavity wall insulation fills the gap between the two leaves of a brick or block wall with a certified insulating material, blown in through small holes drilled from outside. Our Tayside coverage includes Dundee, Perth, Arbroath and the towns around them.

Cavity wall insulation across Tayside

We cover 4 towns in Tayside: Dundee, Perth, Arbroath and Forfar.

Every elevation is judged on its own exposure. Tayside has a mix of moderate and more exposed sites. Hilltop, coastal and west-facing walls take the brunt of wind-driven rain, so the survey records exposure for each elevation before a material is chosen.

A suitable wall in Tayside is usually filled in a single day from outside, with drill holes made good to match the pointing. For semi-detached and terraced homes in Tayside, cavity barriers are fitted where your wall meets your neighbour's so the fill stays on your side.

Building standards in Scotland

In Scotland, work associated with thermal insulating material within a wall is listed in schedule 3 of the Building (Scotland) Regulations as work that does not need a building warrant. It must still meet the building standards, so the survey still checks that the wall and the chosen material are suitable, including exposure to wind-driven rain.

Funding in Scotland

  • Home Energy Scotland is the starting point for the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan and for Warmer Homes Scotland, which can include cavity wall insulation.
  • Many councils also run area-based schemes for insulation in particular streets or estates.
  • ECO4 runs until 31 December 2026 across Great Britain, including Scotland.

What happens on the day?

Holes of around 22mm are drilled in the mortar joints in a set pattern, roughly a metre apart. The insulation is blown in from the bottom up until each section is full, then every hole is filled with colour-matched mortar. Air bricks and flues are protected, and a cavity barrier is fitted where your wall joins a neighbour's.

For an average house with easy access to the walls, the filling itself takes a few hours. Scaffolding or a tower is only needed for three-storey walls or awkward access, and that is priced up front.
