Cavity wall insulation in the Scottish Borders

Cavity wall insulation across the Scottish Borders, survey-first: a written result for every wall and a fixed price before work. Cavity wall insulation across the Scottish Borders

We cover 4 towns in the Scottish Borders: Galashiels, Hawick, Peebles and Kelso.

Exposure matters for every cavity wall. The Scottish Borders has a mix of moderate and more exposed sites. Hilltop, coastal and west-facing walls take the brunt of wind-driven rain, so the survey records exposure for each elevation before a material is chosen.

A suitable wall in the Scottish Borders is usually filled in a single day from outside, with drill holes made good to match the pointing. Where a Scottish Borders property has an extension or a conservatory, we check how the old and new walls meet, because that junction is often missed.

Building standards in Scotland

In Scotland, work associated with thermal insulating material within a wall is listed in schedule 3 of the Building (Scotland) Regulations as work that does not need a building warrant. It must still meet the building standards, so the survey still checks that the wall and the chosen material are suitable, including exposure to wind-driven rain.

Funding in Scotland

  • Home Energy Scotland is the starting point for the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan and for Warmer Homes Scotland, which can include cavity wall insulation.
  • Many councils also run area-based schemes for insulation in particular streets or estates.
  • ECO4 runs until 31 December 2026 across Great Britain, including Scotland.

What happens on the day?

Holes of around 22mm are drilled in the mortar joints in a set pattern, roughly a metre apart. The insulation is blown in from the bottom up until each section is full, then every hole is filled with colour-matched mortar. Air bricks and flues are protected, and a cavity barrier is fitted where your wall joins a neighbour's.

For an average house with easy access to the walls, the filling itself takes a few hours. Scaffolding or a tower is only needed for three-storey walls or awkward access, and that is priced up front.
