Cavity wall insulation in Dorset

Cavity wall insulation fills the gap between the two leaves of a brick or block wall with a certified insulating material, blown in through small holes drilled from outside. Our Dorset coverage includes Bournemouth, Poole, Weymouth and the towns around them.

Cavity wall insulation across Dorset

We cover 4 towns in Dorset: Bournemouth, Poole, Weymouth and Christchurch.

Every elevation is judged on its own exposure. Dorset has a mix of moderate and more exposed sites. Hilltop, coastal and west-facing walls take the brunt of wind-driven rain, so the survey records exposure for each elevation before a material is chosen.

A suitable wall in Dorset is usually filled in a single day from outside, with drill holes made good to match the pointing. Most Dorset houses built from the 1920s onwards have cavity walls, but the survey still checks each one: cavity width, debris, the condition of the brickwork and how exposed each wall is.

Building Regulations in England

Filling an existing cavity wall is notifiable building work in England. Either a building notice goes to building control before the work, or the installer self-certifies it through a government-approved competent person scheme such as CIGA's CWISC scheme. The insulation used must also be suitable for the wall it goes into, which is why the survey checks construction, condition and exposure first.

Funding in England

  • ECO4, the energy-supplier scheme, has been extended to 31 December 2026 and government has said there will be no successor supplier obligation.
  • The Great British Insulation Scheme closed as planned on 31 March 2026.
  • Warm Homes: Local Grant supports low-income households in England through councils, and the January 2026 Warm Homes Plan sets out fully funded upgrades for low-income homes, with more detail still being published.

Is my wall suitable for cavity wall insulation?

Most homes built from the 1920s onwards have cavity walls, but having a cavity is not the same as being suitable. The Energy Saving Trust's rule of thumb is a cavity of at least 50mm, clear of rubble, behind masonry in good condition, on a wall that is not exposed to severe driving rain or flood risk.

That is what our survey checks: wall construction and thickness, cavity width and cleanliness (with a borescope where needed), the state of bricks, pointing, gutters and downpipes, any existing damp, and the exposure of each elevation. If a wall should not be filled, you will be told so in writing, with the reason.
